Dimitris Bertsimas Massachusetts Insitute of Technology [email protected] MS8 Less is More: Robustness and Sparsity in Multivariate Statistics We describe applications of robust optimization in the context of machine learning, with a focus on classification and regression, principal component analysis and fitting of graphical models. In these tasks, sparsity of the solution is often desired as it provides ways to interpret the result. In a classification problem for example, the sparsity pattern of the classifier vector allows to identify the features that are most discriminative. We will explore the connections between sparsity and robustness and illustrate these connections in the context of genomic data, as well as social data, such as voting records and online news. El G. A Neural Network Method Based on Mittag-Leffler Function for Solving a Class of Fractional Optimal Control Problems

In this paper, a computational intelligence method is used for the solution of fractional optimal control problems (FOCP)'s with equality and inequality constraints. According to the Ponteryagin minimum principle (PMP) for FOCP with fractional derivative in the Riemann- Liouville sense and by constructing a suitable error function, we define an unconstrained minimization problem. In the optimiz...

A revisit of a mathematical model for solving fully fuzzy linear programming problem with trapezoidal fuzzy numbers

In this paper fully fuzzy linear programming (FFLP) problem with both equality and inequality constraints is considered where all the parameters and decision variables are represented by non-negative trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. According to the current approach, the FFLP problem with equality constraints first is converted into a multi–objective linear programming (MOLP) problem with crisp const...

An Exact Penalty Function Method for Continuous Inequality Constrained Optimal Control Problem

In this paper, we consider a class of optimal control problems subject to equality terminal state constraints and continuous state and control inequality constraints. By using the control parametrization technique and a time scaling transformation, the constrained optimal control problem is approximated by a sequence of optimal parameter selection problems with equality terminal state constrain...

Second order conditions in optimal control problems with mixed equality - type constraints on a variable time interval

Abstract: This paper provides an analysis of second-order necessary or sufficient optimality conditions of Pontryagin or bounded strong minima, for optimal control problems of ordinary differential equations, considered on a nonfixed time interval, with constraints on initial-final time-state as well as mixed state-control constraints of equality type satisfying condition of linear independence...

On Second-Order Necessary Conditions for Broken Extremals

We consider optimal control problems with initial–final state equality and inequality constraints and running mixed state-control equality constraints given by smooth functions. The mixed constraints satisfy the regularity assumption of linear independence of gradients with respect to the control. We present simple proofs of second-order necessary conditions for (extended) weak minimum for extr...

VOLUME MINIMIZATION WITH DISPLACEMENT CONSTRAINTS IN TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION OF CONTINUUM STRUCTURES

In this paper, a displacement-constrained volume-minimizing topology optimization model is present for two-dimensional continuum problems. The new model is a generalization of the displacement-constrained volume-minimizing model developed by Yi and Sui [1] in which the displacement is constrained in the loading point. In the original model the displacement constraint was formulated as an equali...
